Where did God come from?

It is a fact that something cannot come from nothing. Newton’s Third Law, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction” is an observable fact.

If something could come from nothing, then we should be able to produce a rose with no ingredients at all. This is obviously not possible. We need ingredients in order to make something — anything.

Atheism, the belief that there is no Creator, stands on a broken foundation from the very beginning. Atheism requires a very strong, and admirable, faith. A belief that everything came from nothing, without a Creator, and without ingredients.

who made God

But is the same true for those who believe in an intelligent Creator (God)? The Bible says in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” So in the very first verse of the Bible we see that God existed before the universe was created.

The very question “Where did God come from?” stems from a false understanding of what time is. Time is a creature. Time was created, by God, when the universe was created. It is hard for us to understand how God could exist outside of time, because we exist within time. However, a lack of understanding of something that is true, does not render it false.

“How was God created?” “Who created God?” “Does God have a beginning” All of these questions are actually illogical. Asking these questions is like asking, “What does the smell of a rose look like?” The smell of a rose is not in the category of things that can be seen, so it does not make sense. Or “Can God create a rock so big that He can’t lift it?” (click the link for the explanation of that illogical question).

Asking where God came from is illogical because it presumes that God was created. God does not exist within time and He is not a creature. This is not just faith, this is fact. We know this because we know that from nothing, nothing comes.

If there were ever a time when nothing existed, then nothing could possibly exist today. But things do exist. We exist. The universe exists. So God must have always existed, without a beginning.

This fact is presupposed in the Bible and has been accepted by a large majority of intellectuals and “common people” alike throughout history. Even today, with the sharp rise in atheism, according to the 2015 Pew Religious Landscape survey, approximately 97% of the American population believe in a Creator. The real question we should be asking ourselves is, if I died today and stood before a just God, would I deserve punishment, or reward?

God is very real and He has revealed Himself in the His Word, the Bible. Have you read His Word today? In it, you will find that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The just punishment for sin is eternity away from God in hell forever, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).

God tells us in His Word that “none are good” (Psalm 14:1). He tells us that the only way to have peace with God is by coming to His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, as a repentant sinner, and trusting in Him with our entire being.
